The Designer

Just Spiffy was created in 2001 by Merideth Kinney. Merideth is an artist who specializes in creating custom graphics and web sites for clients that are interested in "uniqueness". She enjoys the challenge of blending artistic design with usability on the web.

Merideth received her A.A.S degree in Web Design from Laramie County Community College and continues to engage in educational classes through the internet. Her project experience of over six years gives Merideth the knowledge and creative perspective of a well seasoned Web Design Professional. She believes that good web design is a combination of beauty and functionality.

Being a small business entrepreuner, Merideth understands that you have unique goals for your growing business. Having worked with several small businesses in a variety of venues, she knows the importance of working closely with her clients to develop their identity on the web.

Domain Registration

A web site's domain name is also referred to as a "web site address", such as "www.yourcompanyname.com". Your domain name is crucial to the success of your online presence. Below are some common questions and answers about purchasing the right domain name.

1. Is it better to purchase a general domain name or company domain name?

There are varying opinions on the answer to this question. I feel that both are important. A generalized domain name is handy with the search engines if you focus on keywords, while the company domain name is brandable. My business is Just Spiffy Web Design, so I have purchased justspiffywebdesign.com and justspiffy.com. I have found that although justspiffy.com doesn't give any indication of what our business is, it is brandable, memorable, and easy to type in. While the main domain name tells the search engines what we do using the keywords "web design".

2. How many domain names can I have for my website?

You can have as many domain names as you'd like for your website, however, I highly recommend you keep it to three or less. You would have a Main domain name, then a few others that point to the same website as well. Consider the keywords the web surfers may use when searching for your particular product or service when developing your domain names.

3. What about hyphenated domain names?

The use of hyphenated domain names is becoming more and more frequent. There are positives and negatives. The negatives are that people will forget to type the hyphens, and they will end up at possibly your competitor's website. A hyphenated domain can be harder to market because people can't share it as easily verbally.. and face it, it's a pain to type.

The advantages are that search engines can distiguish your keywords better and perhaps give you better search engine results for those keywords occurring in your domain name and that if the domain name you want isn't available, the hyphenated form may be the closest you will get to owning it.

4. When should I buy my domain name?

Domain names cost less than $15 per year. If you think of a domain name that you might like to have for your business or for any use, buy it! Buy it right away. The worst thing that will happen is that a year goes by and you never used it.

5. There's a domain name that I want, but it's already taken and the owner is asking for an offer..

Chances are, you won't be able to afford the asking price. There are people who make a living just buying and selling .com names. If you simply must have the domain name, contact a professional to help you in the purchase of it before contacting the owner.

Stage 1:   Discuss Goals
As the owner of your business, you most likely have already established what the goals are for your website. So to begin, we'd like to discuss these particulars with you to fully understand them as well.

Stage 2:   Establish Design Do's and Don'ts
Most likely, you have spent some time on the web, and have a good idea of what you do like, and what you don't. It's safe to say that you have probably considered different sites and gained ideas from them for your own - layout, style, colors, extras. In order to begin the design and development process, we need to know what you like and what you don't.

Stage 3:   Initial Concept Design
An initial design is created from the information we've gathered from you about your site. We create a one page image that shows the layout of the home page of your site. This where you will see the layout and the colors you selected with your logo, navigation and copy. However, it is not a working web page, and therefore nothing is linked. You may pick this design, request some revisions to it, or ask for a new design.

During Stage 2, you, the owner of the website, will be provided with a complete listing of things that we will need from you to complete your website and when to deliver them to us by.

Stage 4:   Finalize Design
We work through the revisions to get to a finalized design layout for your website. Once you have given us the approval on the final design, any changes to the design itself or a request to start over will incurr additional fees.

Stage 5:   Develop Website
Your finalized design will now be created in HTML coding and PHP into a working website. Using the content and information that you have provided us the entire site will be built. We will also install the meta tag information during this phase.

Stage 6:   Revision & Testing Period
Your website will be accessible to you on our test servers so that you may go through it and request revisions on the content and information. These revisions will be completed promptly. We will then test your website and ask you to do the same - checking links, forms and spelling.

Stage 7:   Hosting, Domain & Emails
Once your website is completed, we will set up your domain, hosting and email accounts, and supply you with instructions on how to access each of them.

Stage 8:   Go Live
After we have received the final amount due for your project, we will upload your site to the host server and run another test on all functionalities. Your new site will be submitted to the major search engines by hand, and the open directory. We will also feature your website on the home page of Just Spiffy Web Design for a brief time, until it is moved to our portfolio.

But that's not all...
We also provide maintenance, marketing tips and follow up.

Mal's e-commerce is a remotely hosted shopping cart program created by Mal Stewart. Mal's is free to use to accept Paypal payments, checks or money orders. To accept credit card payments online, you will need to sign up for a Merchant Account and upgrade your account at Mal's to Premium for a small monthly fee. The premium version can integrate with many major credit card processors like Authorize.net and VeriSign.



How It Works
Mal's is pretty simple to set up. We first build your website to your specifications including product layout, descriptions and pricing information. Then we go to Mal's and create your free account. Using some HTML coding, we program Buy Now buttons into your site and options if they are needed for sizes, colors, quantity. The cart is then tested thoroughly to make sure everything is in operating order with the cart. Orders are processed through Mal's and you receive an email notification when an order has been placed.

How do I create galleries and upload pictures?
The easiest way to upload pictures is to use FTP. When you signed up with your hosting company you should have recived this information.

• If using a web browser, type in the URL box ftp://yourftpusername:ypurftppassword@yourdomain.com (i.e. ftp://johndoe:123456@johnsplace.com.
• If you are using an FTP client such as WSFTP_PRO or CUTE FTP follow the instruction wizard fronm the software to connect to your site.
• Once you have the site open in a client or a browser, navigate to a folder in the root directory calld emAlbum.
• Open the emAlbum folder and find a folder called albums.
• Open the albums folder. Here you can create a new folder, this will become a gallery on your live site, so name it accordingly.
• After creating your gallery open that folder, you can now upload your FULL SIZE pictures to the folder you created.
• These images will now be resized to the preset size set in the admin of emAlbum automaticaly on first visit to the site..

1. Open up the admin section to by going to http://www.yourdomain.com/admin. If your Admin is password protected you will need a username and password to access it.
2. Once in the Admin section, click on the Catalog link on the left hand side.
3. Under the categories, click on Categories / Products
4. On the right hand side of the window, select new category.
5. Enter the category information on the right side of the screen.
6. You may choose to enter a sort order. This is the order in which your categories will display on the live site. the lower the number the soon it will display. i.e. 1 will display before 2
7. Click the save button

1. Open up the admin section to by going to http://www.yourdomain.com/admin. If your Admin is password protected you will need a username and password to access it.
2. Once in the Admin section, click on the Catalog link on the left hand side.
3. Under the categories, click on Categories / Products
4. On the right hand side of the window, select new product.
5. You will be directed to the new product page. Enter all the information in the spaces provided. When done click on the preview button.
6. On the next screen, verify that the information is correct. If it is correct, click the insert button. If it is not correct, click the back button and repeat step 5.

• Log in to your osCommerce admin area.
• On the blue welcome screen (or under the tools section depending on your set up) Click on the backup link
• When the Database Backup Manager screen opens, click on the backup button on the right hand side
• A new box will appear on the right hand side, leave radio button next to No Compression (Pure SQL) selected
• there is a check box titled Download only (do not store server side)*. If you want to down load the database backup, select this box. If you wish to keep the backup server side, leave the box unchecked. (We recommend download at least once a month)
• click on the back up button. A back up will occur. Please do not refresh or navigate away from the screen until the line appears at the top of the screen telling you your backup is complete.
